Boyd Pratt led a walk today at Roche Harbor, and told us some of the history of the lime kilns there. The yellow bricks now used for the roadway are fireproof bricks originally used to line the kilns. The amount of wood used in those kilns is staggering, and pictures of the island from those days show mostly denuded countryside.
